Day Two of My 500 Words
Thrive
I have a friend, her
name is Rebecca. I have a plant, her name is Becks. I call them both Becks.
That’s what I do. Rebecca is my example of How to Thrive. According to Merriam
Webster, the definition of Thrive is :

to progress toward or realize a goal despite or because of circumstances —often

Paul and I
remarried back in June of 2015. Rebecca did the decorating, and gave us some
beautiful flowers for us to plant, as a memory. All of them were replanted with
the exception of one, which was my husband’s favorite, but just didn’t get
transplanted, for some reason. I lazily left the container on the porch all
summer, well into the fall and finally decided to bring the pot inside. There
was ONE leaf, hanging on for dear life. I set it by the window and fed it when I
remembered. One day close to Christmas, I bought some Christmas Cactus’ and
repotted this leaf, and the Christmas Cactus into bigger pots, used a good
fertilizing soil mix from the farm store at the corner and mixed up a packet of
Miracle Grow Singles and put the 3 plants on the stove, under the light. Within
a week, she looked like THIS!!
I continued the process, watered when I
remembered but kept the 3 plants together under the light. Today, she looks
like THIS!!!
This reminds me so much of my friend
Rebecca. Man, I think we became friends because 1. She inspired me, but mostly
2. She told me we were going to become friends!! Rebecca is THAT friend that
you want around when things are going great, and when you are scraping the
bottom. She is an encourager. Like many encouragers, and people that build
others up, Rebecca has been handed a good and bad hand in life. This makes the
best encouragers. Once you have been at the top, and crash on your back, and
pull yourself back up, and slip and fall, and dig dig dig your way back to
ALMOST where you were, there is always a person, a situation, a ‘test’ that
kind of kicks you in the teeth and says HA! START AGAIN SUCKER, you KNOW the
feeling. The feeling while at the top, the feeling while you are falling, the
feeing while you are grasping at anything to get ahold of, that feeling of
almost success again, and the repeated things that come along with that
journey.
Just like the plant, Rebecca has never let
go of her foundation. She has been through the good, the bad and the ugly.
Sadly, I was part of the bad, and she never threw that in my face. She never
held that against me. She just kept growing and getting ‘pruned’, the growing
stronger, and getting cut back, and never once… not ONE TIME, did she say, I am
done. Life is too much for me. I hate you. I hate … anything, or anyone. And
she has had many opportunities to do so. Thrive… to progress toward or
realize a goal despite or because of circumstances. My friend Rebecca
and my plant Becks. The topic of my day 2 of my 31 days of My 500 Words on my
blog. I wanted to share this with her though, because I don’t think anyone ever
recognizes how truly strong she really is.
Thanks Becks… for
being an inspiration

What a nice tribute to your friend. Though they are not my close friends, I have been blessed to know a few women like this. Currently, there is a mother and daughter in my bible study group that are encouragers. Just a few moments in their presence leaves you feeling loved and so much better about, well, everything. How lucky we are that God puts these people among us. :)
