Ben Carson claims this abortion exception a ‘spurious argument’ by Glenn Beck Program Friday, Aug 14, 2015 at 2:50 PM EDT Share This Tweet This Some of those most ardent anti-abortion activists still make the case that they would permit abortions in order to save the life of the mother. Having worked in medicine for most of his life, Dr. Ben Carson has a unique perspective on this debate. Dr. Carson claims that abortions done to save the life of the mother are actually rare due to medical advancements, and this is actually a false argument.

“I spent my entire career as a pediatric neurosurgeon frequently staying up all night, fighting, struggling to save the lives of little babies, even operating on babies inside the womb. So I don’t think it should be hard for anybody to understand that I am totally opposed to killing babies,” Dr. Carson told CBS This Morning.

“I think when it comes to the case of the life of mother, you have to look at the individual situation. Recognize that that’s largely a spurious argument because we’ve advanced so much in medicine today that that situation rarely occurs,” he added.

Over the past several days, many news organizations have reported this week that Dr. Carson used fetal tissue for medical research in 1992 in order to paint Dr. Carson as a hypocrite.

“So he’s very, very clear on this. Now we’re not supposed pay attention to what Hillary Clinton did yesterday or what anybody on the left believed two weeks ago,” Glenn said. “We’re not allowed to remember what these people were doing, but they went back all the way to Mitt Romney and a haircut in the 1960s.

” Dr. Carson said in a statement, “There is absolutely no contradiction between the research I worked on in 1992 and my pro-life views. The issue of fetal tissue has everything to do with how the tissue is acquired. My primary responsibility in that research was operating on people to obtain diseased tissue for comparison to banked tissue samples. Killing babies and harvesting tissue for sale is very different than taking a dead specimen and keeping a record of it, which is exactly the source of the tissue used in our research.”
